“The Master’s Degree Programme brought many advantages for me”

Adarsh is 26 and is in his fourth semester of studying Computer Aided Conception in Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, where he is specialising in numerical calculation, computer simulation and applied mechanics. He has been writing his master’s thesis at TECOSIM in Munich since November 2022. His thesis is on the development of an FE impactor model to validate airbags during their development stage. It aims to develop a method to determine the impactor parameters for knee airbags for different load cases. We asked Adarsh a few questions.

Masters’ candidate at TECOSIM in Munich
What appeals to you about virtual vehicle development?

It is one of the most important phases of vehicle development. The better you understand and build a virtual model, the better you can predict the behaviour of the actual vehicle.

What excites you about CAE?

CAE allows engineers to directly apply the theoretical knowledge to create feasible practical applications. One can easily try out several variants to arrive at the optimal solution. It gives me the ability to understand the scientific principles behind a phenomenon a level deeper.

What exactly is your master’s thesis about?

Different crash load cases impose different forces on the occupant and airbags are a major component of reducing the risk of the injury. During airbag development, it is important to validate if the airbag can satisfactorily protect the occupant in the event of a crash. That is exactly what I do.

How does TECOSIM help you?

I have regular meetings to discuss the progress on the thesis. My advisers also help me with explaining the technical concepts that could be useful for the process.

How did you learn about TECOSIM?

During my internship, I had a colleague who was previously employed at TECOSIM. He informed me that the company also takes students for master’s thesis on a regular basis.

What appealed to you about the topic?

Airbag simulations are one of the most complex parts of occupant safety simulation. They deal with fluid structure interactions and the right results go a long way to protecting occupants in a crash.

How did you go about searching for a partner company for your final thesis?

I started looking for topics in my areas of interest on different job search portals. I also searched directly for companies I knew were working in this field.

Bachelor’s vs. Master’s. What advantages do you see in studying for a master’s over bachelor studies?

The master’s has been beneficial for me. It helped me focus on topics that I am interested in. Doing a Master’s in Computational Mechanics has provided me with a strong theoretical background for the work I am doing now.

What do you like most about our company?

The atmosphere in the office is very friendly. I can approach anyone at any time to clear up a doubt or start a general discussion. The working hours are flexible. I am also able to work home from if required.

Can you see yourself joining TECOSIM after completing your studies?

I would like to find a full-time job in the field of occupant safety simulation. I can imagine starting my professional career at TECOSIM. If an opportunity exists, I’ll definitely continue my journey with TECOSIM.

Many thanks for talking to us, Adarsh.
